Brighton Tennis Club Latest News for 2014

November 2, 2014: As another great season winds down, we can look back on a number of successful activities within our club including:

Our first Mixed Singles Ladder was well organized by Ron and well received by many members of our club.  Congratulations to all of the participants who dug in and challenged up the rungs of the ladder and to Mike B. who deservedly finished at the very top. Final results are linked on this website's homepage.

Our Annual General Meeting, again hosted by Gary, saw a record number of members attend to enjoy the food, laughter and plans for next season.  To see photos of the fun evening, taken by John, follow both of these links: AGMSinglesPhotos and AGMDoublesPhotos  .

September 17, 2014: For Club Members: Our Annual General Meeting and Year End Party will thankfully be hosted by Gary again.  His home makes a perfect venue for a fun gathering.  Please click here AGM14  to see details and be sure to RSVP Alyson so that she can arrange the food.

September 12, 2014: The Doug Grant Tennis Open Tournament that was to be held on our courts from September 12-14 has been cancelled.   Our courts will be available for play this weekend after all.  Please remember that we have set Friday evenings on the schedule for Junior members and their families/friends and Sunday Morning is the regularly scheduled Men's Morning.  Tennis weather won't last much longer.... get out and play!

Also: This is an early notification for members... Our Annual General Meeting and End of Season Party will be on Friday evening October 3rd at Gary's place.  Mark your calendar and plan to attend.  Being part of the AGM gives you a chance to be involved and aware of the workings of our club. The party following is always great fun. Details will be sent to members by email soon.

September 10, 2014: Our two-part Mixed Doubles Final Tournament for the season was a huge success, even though the morning session participants had to postpone play until Sunday.  The Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning group hit the courts with gusto and cheerfully socialized on the sidelines between matches.  We owe much appreciation to Karl and Marianne for all of their preparations and organization on and off the courts so that the matches ran smoothly.  Alyson was the one who made sure we had snacks and drinks to recharge with including, no thanks to Bryan (although he helped in other ways), delicious homemade muffins. A number of businesses and individuals were kind enough to donate great prizes.  That prize table is always part of the fun and an extra incentive to get to each shot.  Thanks to Bryan and Aly who took photos on Sunday and to Dave who arrived on Saturday with some serious camera equipment.  Check out the pictures by clicking on these links: SaturdaySet1  and  SaturdaySet2 and Sunday

September 3, 2014: The Doug Grant Tennis Open is being held on our Brighton Courts this year.  This is a Charity Event with proceeds going to the Belleville Chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society. It will take place on September 12, 13 and 14th. Entry deadline is September 11 at 9:00pm.  Entry fees are $25 for Singles and $30 for a Doubles Team.  For details or entry, call Mike Pope: 613-242-3311 or email:

Brighton Members: this is an opportunity to compete with players from the wider region and to be involved in a different tournament format.  If you are interested, don't miss that deadline!

August 29, 2014:   A small but mighty contingent of guys actually had faith that the Men's Tournament would be a 'go' and showed up ready to play on Wednesday evening.  Thanks to Karl for being available to run the tournament for 3 Wednesdays in a row and to Alyson for making sure refreshments were available.  Marianne showed up incognito so that we would have some photographic evidence that the event did, in fact take place.  Click here for her photos.  Notice how high-impact our new banner is. It looks great from the courts as well as for anyone driving by. Dennis has been at work yet again.

August 27, 2014: 3 Things again: 1) The Men's Doubles Tournament has been postponed twice. With any luck tonight is the night.  Men- get there at 6:45 for a 7:00 pm start up and enjoy the good weather!

2) Crack repair painting continues this week on Friday (August 29) afternoon and evening.  The courts will be closed at this time. Again, thanks go out to Dennis and other members who lend a hand to keep our courts in good shape.

3) You might have seen someone taking photos on Monday evening outside the courts.  Anu investigated why the pictures were being taken and sent this link for sharing  Have a look at scenes from around our town. Brighton is a 'happening place'!

August 20, 2014: 3 Items: 1) Weather permitting, the Men's Doubles Tournament, originally scheduled for last Wednesday when it was wildly windy, is set to go ahead this evening at 7:00 pm.

2) Dennis has looked ahead at the weather forecast for this Friday and determined that he can paint the cracks he so diligently repaired.  This means the courts will be closed from mid-afternoon Friday August 22 through the evening.  The plan is to unlock the courts again for play on Saturday morning.  Dennis anticipates painting the white lines next Friday, August 29.  We will keep you posted.

3) Ron has been keeping all Ladder participants updated through regular emails.  The home page of our website now has the most recent rankings listed too.  Use your back button to see where everyone stands (or falls!)

July 27, 2014: 3 Things at this time:

1) Last Call on Club Clothing.  Karen is willing to organize one more group order this season for anyone who missed getting club apparel the first time around, or for anyone who is thinking "Wow, I look so good in these BTC clothes, I should have more....".  Karen will be on the courts this Tuesday and Wednesday evening during Ladies' Night and Men's Night AND this Wednesday morning during Mixed Doubles.  That's July 29 in the evening and July 30th in the morning and evening. That's it for this year, so get yourself in gear and speak to Karen at one of these times if you want to place an order.

2) Judging by the look of the courts this morning, some hard working people managed to get those nasty cracks filled as planned. We really appreciate their efforts and await word on the next step of the process.

3) A Men's Tournament (members only) is planned for Wednesday August 13 (rain date August 20).  Mark it on your calendar.  An email with details will be sent out to the men soon.

July 22, 2014: Efforts are underway to repair the multiple cracks that have shown up on our courts.  Thanks go out to Dennis and his team of helpers for arranging to fill the cracks this upcoming weekend (Friday evening and Saturday during the day).  We will keep our fingers crossed that the weather will cooperate with these plans.  The next phase of the repairs involves painting on a top coat.  This will also be a Friday evening/Saturday project but will require fair weather for a day before and following the painting, so the timing on this cannot be determined as yet.  We will do our best to keep everyone informed.

July 16, 2014: We had wonderful weather, great games, tasty snacks and lively conversation at our Ladies' Tournament on July 15th.  Thanks go out to Alyson and Marianne for organizing the event and tracking the scores.  Since the expression goes "A picture is worth a thousand words", check out the photos of our fun by clicking here...   It worked out well to have different people picking up the camera.

July 13, 2014: Some time has passed since news was posted here but that doesn't mean that our club has been inactive.... quite the opposite!  The courts have been busy with regularly scheduled Mixed Doubles, Men's and Ladies' times PLUS we've had the additional excitement of challenges on the Mixed Singles Ladder.  Thanks to Ron for organizing the ladder and for keeping everyone who signed up for the ladder aware of the rankings through frequent emails.  The rankings have also just been updated on this website.  To view them, go back to the homepage and click on the MSL link near the top of the page.

Way back on June 26th David Lea from OTA came out to our courts to give us pointers on Doubles Play and to develop some of our ground strokes.  We suspected this would be a popular event and had members pre-register.  Indeed the courts were full that evening of players keen to hear David's words of tennis wisdom.  John H. kindly offered to grab his camera from his car to capture our after-clinic smiles. Check the following link

For the Ladies:  Don't forget that since the rain stopped our Ladies' Members Tournament on July 8th, we're going to have our Tournament on July 15th instead.

Also, many of you are now sporting snazzy new Brighton Tennis Club shirts and hats.  Don't we look great?!  Karen put considerable effort into helping members decide on sizes/colours and delivering the clothing orders. Thank you, Karen.

June 15, 2014: Two changes have been made to our schedule now that Junior Lessons have wrapped up for another season.  In order to encourage our Junior members to keep up their skills and enjoy the sport, we have designated Friday evenings as "Junior Members with Friends and Family Time" from 6:30 - 8:30 pm.

As well, Saturday mornings are now available for a second Ladies time on our weekly schedule.  Saturday mornings are now Women's Mornings.  This gives both the men and women of our club a morning and evening time slot.  The updated schedule is now on this website's homepage and will be posted at the courts soon.

May 26 27, 2014: Two things.... 1) For Photos from our Meet and Greet Tournament, click here: Meet and Greet Photos

2) Karen and Mike are arranging to order T-Shirts, Golf-style shirts and Sweatshirts with a Brighton Tennis Club stitched name and racquets logo. The prices are very reasonable and the colours are vibrant.  Speak with Karen or Mike J. when you see them at the courts if you would like to place an order.

May 24, 2014:  We had a huge turn out and tons of fun at our Meet and Greet Tournament today.  Having the record number of 26 players meant lots of lively games alternated with lots of time for lively conversation.  Thanks to Karl for patiently sorting out the matches; to Marianne for her cheerful support and to Alyson for stocking our snack table.  Thanks to Sharon and Kathryn we have photo memories of the day.  These photos should be posted over the next few days.  Check back soon!

In other club news.... Ron has made a few revisions to the Mixed Singles Ladder Guidelines.  To learn more about our Mixed Singles Ladder, return to the homepage and click on the MSL2014 link.

May 19, 2014: Roger's Cup Tennis is back on the horizon!  This August the world's best men (tennis players) will be competing at the Rexall Centre in Toronto.  Members of our club can take advantage of discount ticket offers because we are also OTA members.  See the information and offers contained within the following links: OTARogersDiscounts and OTAPromo2014

May 5, 2014:  Attention new and returning members- Plan to join us at our annual Meet and Greet Tournament on Saturday May 24, 2014.  Play starts at 10:30 am (this time has been changed from the original 9:00 am posting) Please arrive by 10:15 so that we can set up matches and you can get in a little warm-up.  Our rain date will be Sunday May 25 at 1:00.  This is a fun, mixed doubles tournament.  The organizers will arrange the partners and order of play.  All you have to do is show up, ready to enjoy a lively morning of tennis and socializing.

May 4, 2014: In spite of less than ideal temperatures, our tennis season is finally underway.  We're pleased that our certified instructors, Jon Martindale and Amanda Watson, managed to get their junior lessons started on the weekend.  Thanks to Marianne for being on hand to sign up junior members who missed registration.  Speaking of missing registration... we suspect that there are still many former members lurking out there who intend to join this year, but have not done so yet.  So that Marianne isn't missing her playing time on the courts, we are asking that those who have yet to sign up do so by following the instructions in the April 27th posting below.

May 3, 2014: Jay Neill, Club Membership Manager for the OTA, has sent our club the following information to share:  "OTA Members’ <If you've joined our club, you are automatically an OTA member> Day is set for May 24 at the Merchant of Tennis locations at 1621 Bayview Ave. in Toronto as well as the Oakville location (Olde Oakville Market Place, 361 Cornwall Road).
