News  and Links from our Previous Seasons: 2010 &2009

November 1, 2010: Now that we're into November, the plan is to lock up our courts for the winter.  It's hard to say goodbye to our 2010 season!  We got off to such an early start, had enthusiastic participation in junior and adult lessons, lively mixed mornings, well attended ladies and mens' evenings and several fun tournaments throughout the season. Thanks to all who participated and especially to our organizers. Take a moment from time to time throughout the 'off-season' to check this website because if any information comes up relevant to our tennis club, it will be posted here. Even if the courts are covered in snow, we can always dream of warm weather and getting out to play again!

October 3, 2010:  Just a reminder to members trying to get the most out of the season:  We are still hoping to have the cracks repaired; however, this requires a string of fairweather days, so it is difficult to predict when the job will be done.  Of course the courts will not be available for use for those two or three days.

We will be leaving the nets up and courts unlocked until the end of October.  May the weather hold out until Halloween!

October 3, 2010:  We had a good turnout for our End of the Season Potluck/AGM on October 1st.  Some members who were fortunate enough to be able to get to Gary's in the afternoon had the opportunity to roam around in the Autumn splendour of the woods surrounding his hilltop home.  Those of us working stiffs who arrived a little later were still able to take in the glorious view right from the warmth of Gary's living room.  We truly appreciated Gary opening up his home to us.  It was a lovely place for our members to meet and mingle.  It was interesting to see Gary's wood turning studio. Hopefully we weren't so enthused about his wood working that he is encouraged to give up his tennis instructing!  Thanks also go out to Karl for keeping track of our club business, ALL YEAR LONG.  He prepared a financial outline to share at the AGM and encouraged our input for future plans.  Even though Karl captured our attention with his colourful paper, we were much more amenable thanks to having eaten our fill of good food.  The potluck contributions were delicious and the burgers and "fixin's" were really tasty.  That would be because of Marianne's willingness to run around, organize, shop and prepare food for us to enjoy- again!  Marianne and Karl do many behind-the-scenes things to help our club run smoothly. We are grateful for their efforts and the time they spend on our behalf.

September 22, 2010: The court repairs we hoped to have done this week are now scheduled for mid-next week.  Two sunny days in a row are required.  For now the company doing the repairs is hoping to get to work on them around the 28th/29th.  We're sorry for the inconvenience.  Why not get out on the courts in the meantime?!

September 16, 2010:  We've just received word that repairs will be made to cracks on the courts.  That is the good news.  The bad news is that this means the courts will be closed on September 21, 22 and 23.  We're sorry that Ladies and Men's nights will have to be cancelled on those dates.  We'll hope for favourable weather so that there will still be many opportunities to play after the repairs are completed.

September 15, 2010: It's been a wonderful tennis season and it will be sad to see it come to an end.  We have a little more fun in store for members, though....Our annual End of Season Social & Annual General Meeting will be held on Friday, October 1, 2010 at Gary's place

September 14, 2010: Apologies to the members who received a spam-type email that appeared to come from me (Kathryn Corbett) dated September 14, with [No Subject] in the subject line.  I did NOT send this email.  I DID send an email afterwords to warn members to delete the [No Subject] email.  I have been in touch with my internet security provider and am currently corresponding with Yahoo.  I have also changed my password. This website is a separate entity with separate privacy and password settings, so it is not affected. In order to be sure all is well with my Yahoo account, I will not be sending any emails to tennis members for the next week.  Meanwhile, Brighton Tennis news can always be accessed at this website.

September 12, 2010: The skies were blue, the competition was friendly, the snacks were delicious and the crowd went wild yesterday as 16 members of our club turned out for our End of Summer Mixed Doubles Tournament.  The U.S. Open in New York might have Clijsters and Nadal, but Brighton's got its own winners: Marianne and Mike and Murray and Anu and Cindy and Amanda and a whole gang of enthusiastic players.  We had a great time and truly appreciated the organizational skills of Karl, who set up, timed and tracked the matches (with back-up from Marianne and Alison, once Karl headed to a phone booth to change into his soccer coaching gear.)  We are also very grateful to Karen for the time and charm she put into gathering so many wonderful prizes.  It made our tournament even more special when we knew we all had a chance at that great gift table! Of course we will be thanking those local businesses for their donations. You can see who our supporters were by reading the blue sign behind our winners in the tournament photos. For photos of the fun, click here.

August 29, 2010: Brighton Tennis Club is proud to have taken part in the TSN/Kraft Celebration held at King Edward Park on August 28. The event was a huge show of community spirit.  Our tennis courts were featured in a series of sports activities that participants were encouraged to explore, getting their 'Passports' stamped to be eligible for a grand prize.  We had dozens of kids and adults trying their hand at mini-tennis using the nets set up for progressive tennis.  The breeze kept those sponge balls flying!  Many also tested their ability using the ball machine.  Big THANKS to Dennis for keeping that ball machine running and to both Dennis and Gary for all the work they did setting up the courts in a way that welcomed the community and handled the crowds.  Natalie and David shared their energy in keeping the activities humming and fun and Karl and Gillian moved around generally helping out and picking up stray balls (and talking up the game and our club!) Well done, volunteers and participants!!

October 25, 2009: Our end of year gathering was held on Saturday, October 24th at Gary's place.  Several members (and their dogs) took advantage of his surrounding trails to hike in the Fall splendour.  More members arrived later in the afternoon to enjoy Gary's hospitality, the spectacular view, great food and companionship.  At this time we also held our A.G.M. so that Karl could share information about the club's successes, finances and plans.  A big THANK YOU to Gary for hosting our gathering; Marianne and Karen for their organization; and to Karl for his preparation and presentation of our club's business.   The courts will be locked for the winter at the end of October, but we look forward to another fun season in 2010!

Thanks to Gary for offering his place for our gathering and to Marianne for setting up what is sure to be another fun event.

September 14, 2009:  We had an excellent turnout for our End of Summer Tournament on Sept. 13th.  Mixed doubles teams were drawn, 20 minute sets were played, then teams were reshuffled while Karl tallied games won.

Congratulations to our highest scorer, Mike J..  After Mike, the next highest games won percentages were achieved by Gary, then Marianne, Mike S., and Shelley. Thanks to our organizers Karen, Mike J. and Marianne.  The atmosphere was fun and the competition was friendly.  Not a single racquet was smashed (although one nose was bumped).  We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Brighton businesses that provided prizes:  Wain's Nursery; Reilly's Awards; End of the Thread; Mrs. B's Country Candy; Lola's Coffee House; and Dragonfly as well as Benton Fry Ford and Sportmart of Belleville.  We also appreciate Gary's support and donation of a coveted prize.  Some (or lots) of our energy was fueled by coffee and muffins cheerfully provided by Baker's Dozen.  Let's hope that we can look forward to another successful tournament like this one next season!

August 30, 2009: We're having a Farewell to Summer Tournament on Sunday, September 13th, starting at 9:00am on our Brighton Courts.  This is a just-for-fun tournament, mainly mixed doubles, so simply show up and we'll sort out partners at the courts.  There will be prizes and snacks and drinks provided.  Come on out and have fun!
